I'm very sorry...

About birthday parties and Oktoberfest specialities

The next birthday is due soon. My son is the lucky guy to be celebrated by a birthday party. The time is passing fast – I would even say, too fast for me. Just he was small and cute and now he is eight years old and only cute.
Since long I am thinking of which kind of party I am going to arrange this year. The party should be different and not the normal ones which we had the last years with children games and matches.

Let’s go to the Oktoberfest!

The first day at school of my daughter, the prearrangements of  the birthday party for my son and the visit of the Oktoberfest with some guests -  all this kept me busy last week and no time at all was left to create new recipes. But instead I am going to present you some impressions from this wonderful “Oktoberfest”...

Résumé of a vacation and a visit to the movies

We are back again. After two weeks in Gargano/ Italy the normality has returned to my life but with one difference: I am really relaxed.
If I think about that beautiful place I can imagine to spend my life there and do my writing at a place which seems to be made particularly for artists and all those people who need for their creative work places with such a charisma and beauty.

How important are regular family meals?

Day before yesterday when I had lunch together with my colleagues we had a discussion about a newspaper article which I read some days ago. Subject was a study about the eating culture of the families. The result of this study was that children taking meal regularly together with their family members (at least 5 times a week) are living much healthier than others.

Spending the beautiful warm summer evenings together with my computer

There are days where you do not check what is going on. Last week I had even more of these days. Of course there are times where nothing happens and everything runs smoothly. But frankly speaking, I do not remember having such a day for the last weeks. In my vocabulary the word "quietness" does not exist at all and particularly the word “boredom” is more than a strange word for me.

About Presents and favourite recipes

The end of the school-and kindergarten year is near. Like every year a lot of presents are due. Presents for the school teachers, kindergarten teachers, football- and gymnastic-trainers and so on.
And everyone should get something special. It should be handmade, not to big, useful and what reminds on the common time with the children. Last but not least she or he should get the feeling that it´s very personal, too.

Jam Session: When Mum makes jam...

Usually when I start my annual jam production line I have two excited watchers on my side - sometimes even more. Very proud my children  tell their friends that me, their mum, is the best jam maker of the world.

Acacias, oleanders and a beautiful lake

We are really lucky living here in Bavaria in an area where normally people spend their holidays. The mountains are nearby and the South of Europe is just a stone’s throw away. In a 4-hours-ride you will be in the centre of Italy like in Gargnano, a very old Italian village located at the West side of the beautiful Lake Garda. And there we spent last week our holiday. It was fantastic – a paradise on earth. The vegetation and landscape was typical for the Southern part of Europe. Oleander, palms and acacias wherever you look and the old houses (Jugendstil) well decorated by bougainvillea in all colours intensified this impression strongly.

Italy meets Asia: The Pineapple Lasagne

I think, spring is coming. It looks like and the weather people say so.
What does it mean to me? Besides all the other things, it inspires me to change my winter cooking behaviour. I increase the part of salad, vegetables and fruits of my dishes which dominates usually my summer food program.
As the asparagus season has only just started, the wild garlic tries to awake to life (at least here in my part of the country) and the strawberries are still hiding in the depth of the soil, I switch my attention to a fruit which stays for me as the symbol of summer, sun, beach and good temper – the pineapple.

Fast and inventive: The Beetroot Carpaccio

I have to admit: I am hooked. Hooked on cook-books and cook-magazines and all the recipes I can catch.
Always when I stroll through these books and magazines or look into the Internet for searching for recipes I get new ideas and inspirations. I have already real problems to store all the notices, copies and printouts of my recipe-information. My kitchen is small and the space limited. Something delicious from Austria

Now I feel the time has come to make a so-called “Tafelspitz”.
During the preparation time I tried to remember where the name of this Austrian speciality has come from. I guessed the origin of the name could be created by that typical shape of meat from the tale-root of the cow which is used for the dish. Or does it come it from a special presentation while serving the dish?

Happy Birthday, Darling!

Yesterday the most important day of the year took place. It was the 6th birthday of our little lady. Naturally, she invited all her friends for this “very important event” and she had been so excited for weeks that she could not even sleep. And suddenly I had the similar problem, I could not sleep either. Every night she woke me up telling me enthusiastically that she was so much excited as her birthday was coming soon.
One day when she continued this strange behaviour I told her: “Look girl, if you do not stop waking me up every night I will be too tired to arrange the birthday party of yours at all” .
The next night passed by without any interruption.

Ginger tea, not only delicious but also healthy

The stressful time of carnival is over now and we have to return to the normal daily life.

But it’s ok for me. I go for skiing – to Lenggries!
Wednesday is “Lady-Day”. What´s that? Skiing is cheaper for this kind of humans. Females only have to spend 14 € for a one-day lift-ticket.
Yesterday Sabine and myself used this occasion and went for skiing. We tried to ignore the icy road and drove or better slit direction Bad Tölz to conquer the white mountains of the Alps.
We were really lucky. The sun was shining, the snow glittering and the trees were covered with icy crystals.

Inspirations

Last Saturday I met my Friend Susi in Munich. We went to a little but very good Italian Restaurant called “Il Gattopardo”, located in the Nordendstraße 58. The small room consisted of some tables only but looked a bit larger as the kitchen opens to the guest room. The staff was well trained, very friendly and very active, lets say: typical Italian.
As starter I ordered calamari with artichokes. The main course was pasta with scallops. During the time till we got our meal the owner offered small quantities of different products of his kitchen for trial. Finally, when we got our food we were already full, but we could not avoid to enjoy all these tasty creations which our host offered to us. Due to all that circumstances and impressions we felt being really in Italy.

Helau!!!

First of all I have to admit: I do not like carnival nor do I like to wear fancy dresses.
Here in my personal environment people don’t harm such a confession. In Cologne, the centre of carnival, it would be definitely different.
People here tolerate this aversion of mine but in spite of this fact it still happens sometimes that I am forced by soft pressure to participate at a fancy dress party during this special time of the year.
The fancy dress party of my friend Isabell is such an occasion where I can not avoid to participate.
The motto “Hollywood” is a challenge for the creativity of the invited guests.

The Faux Pas

It can happen to everybody – even to a hobby cook like me - but I can bear it.
Yesterday I made the sad experience myself as my friend Frauke visited me. I wanted to surprise her with a delicious salad made out of chicken breast filet, lettuce, different fruits and a wonderful orange dressing. The visual appearance of the salad was really appetising.
I squeezed an orange and filled the juice in a cup where I added later some honey, salt, pepper, lime juice and olive oil. I stirred the dressing and poured it over the salad.

And afterwards you have to suffer....

I am fasting. To be more exact I am fasting according the method of Buchinger. That means - I am drinking tea, juices and bouillon only. That´s the result if you try to fulfil consequent a New Year´s resolution. Fact is that I have eaten too much during the Christmas holidays, or be more honest - even during the whole December - and I have consumed too much hot wine punch, champagne, red wine and similar delicious liquids with the result that my weight exploded a bit. Little presents keep a friendship alive

One of the most important question these days is: which kind of presents do I choose for Christmas? Should it be a book, a CD, a perfume, something to dress, some kind of furniture stuff or should it go in direction of jewellery? It´s really difficult. The time goes by and the pressure grows. Especially complicated is to find a present for somebody who has either everything or does not want anything.

Authors and their favourites

This new subject is very especial for me. Due to this reason it was difficult to find the right way to  begin this story.

When my school-time started many years ago, the teacher had a lot of difficulties to introduce me to the secret of writing. Even my parents who tried to support the frustrated woman by training me at home, gave up hope soon. After some time it was a open secret: this girl would never be able to write and read. But as you can imagine: they were all wrong – I learned it. And soon I discovered the secret of the written words. No book was secure from my attack  and I indulged my new passion vehemently. And I found out that printed words impressed me much more than any picture or movie. That´s the reason why I admire writers and authors so much.

A brand new soup-composition out of pumpkin and pomegranate

It´s pumpkin time. Everywhere you go, at least in the countryside, you see pumpkins just waiting to get bought.
But Halloween has not come yet. But what does it matter? Already now you can buy Christmas items like Santa Claus in all versions, Advent calendars or sweets like marzipan potatoes.
